By Christine Wiegand, SAP Design Guild Team – November 17, 2000
Our team has a good reason to be merry: in a few weeks, shortly before X-mas, we will proudly present the second edition of the SAP Design Guild. Since the successful publication of the first edition featuring the topic, "mySAP.com Workplace and MiniApps - Steps towards a Personalized and Efficient Electronic Work Environment," in August 2000, we have been very busy. As you know, the SAP Design Guild is dedicated to building up a community of and for user interface designers, whether they are involved with SAP directly or not. We have been working hard toward improving our services for you and bringing UI-relevant information to you. Many of these activities have been processed in the background, without you even noticing them. We'd like to take a moment to give you a short overview about the latest activities going on in the SAP Design Guild.
At the moment, we are preparing the second edition of the SAP Design Guild featuring the topic "Reporting;" we announced this recently in the "Forum," our discussion board. We have contacted prospective authors, and we are now eagerly awaiting their answers and contributions. Of course, we would like to encourage you to share your knowledge as well by writing articles for the new edition. We will also be featuring interviews with SAP colleagues, which may be published at intervals after the official release of the new edition. So keep an eye out for those. In addition to our usual preparation, we recently distributed SAP Design Guild posters to all SAP subsidiaries world-wide. If you like, you can download the poster for your desktop wallpaper here as JPEG file (46 KB), or for printing as PDF file (59 KB).

We have also tried to make the "Web slice" of the SAP Design Guild more visible. There is a style guide for SAP's Internet Application Components (IACs) in the members section of the Design Guild. As far as we know, an application style guide is unique to the Web. We have also added a quick guide for the design of "typical" information-based Websites in the open area, which also has some unique features that sets it apart from the "usual" style guides and Web design guides. Note, however, that this is not an "official" SAP style guide, but a contribution from a team member. We also added a Web glossary to the new "Goodies" section.
The "Goodies" section, located in the construction area, is a recent addition to the SAP Design Guild. This is the place for our "nice-to-have" resources - one more reason to keep checking back at the SAP Design Guild for interesting information and topics concerning user interface design! Here we offer, for example, a SAP Usability Glossary, to help you find your way through the buzz words in the SAP usability and design arena. We also offer short lists of interesting books and links in the design field. Last but not least, we added a Web Glossary (which you can find in a similar form in the new Web design guide). Of course, we have plenty of plans for the future. In progress are a Color Glossary and some instructive optical illusions.
Moreover, we would like to draw your attention to the SAP Design Guild survey in which you can participate soon. We want to learn more about your interests in the area of user interface and user-centered design so we can improve our site and provide information that's really interesting to you. By completing the survey you can automatically take part in a raffle for a book about user interface design. We will announce the survey on our homepage as soon as you can take part in it. Look for it in the news section on our homepage!
There is a lot of activity going on in and behind the scenes at the SAP Design Guild. Come, take a look around and see for yourself!
Best regards,
The SAP Design Guild Team
