Objectives of EnjoySAPUser OrientationUsers and their requirements of applications were placed at the center of all development activities. In addition, visits to customers were to be arranged in order to observe users working with the R/3 System. The intention was to give software engineers a more direct insight into users’ problems and requirements by putting them in contact with users, while maintaining the input channels already in place in the form of market research, user groups, working groups with pilot customers etc. Software engineers were to experience directly the usability problems of their applications in action in order to improve their perception of where there was potential for improvement. The focus was to be on a changed appearance, improved interaction with the application systems and a customized range of functions. In other words, users would only be offered that part of R/3’s functionality that they really needed to complete the work assigned to them. The abbreviation VIP (Visualization - Interaction - Personalization) was used to put across this objective of EnjoySAP to the outside world [EnjoySAP 1999]. This reflected the feedback from customers as to the areas where there was the greatest potential for improvement: On the one hand, the range of functions available to the individual user was to be reduced to a reasonable level, and the functions were to be grouped together in job-specific user roles (e.g. purchaser, secretary). On the other, the usability of this functionality was to be optimized. Finally, the user interface was to have an attractive appearance, thus taking into account users’ increasing requirements for aesthetically pleasing user interfaces.
