Design Consultant – Position Description
Join Design Services Team! Become part of a multidisciplinary design
team working on the future of enterprise software. The Design Services
Team sits within the Office of the CEO allowing the group to reach across
the organization to use design to impact SAP strategy, products and most
importantly people. We design and develop innovative solutions, processes
and tools that are technically feasible, economically viable and from
a user’s perspective, highly desirable.

Objective: As part of the Office of the CEO the Design Services Team
reports to Henning Kagermann, SAP’s CEO and is SAP’s core
design innovation team providing strategic design support and counsel
to the CEO and SAP’s Executive Board. DST Design Consultants work
on exciting design problems centered on bringing together SAP’s
business strategy with emerging technologies and business models with
a strong focus on the needs of the end-user and their organization. DST
Design Consultants work in a cross-disciplinary team providing consulting
services to SAP Executive Leaders. The team identifies and defines problems,
conducts research, brainstorms solutions, designs and validates prototypes
to create breakthrough solutions for SAP’s customers and partners.
The DST is a multi-disciplinary team comprised of seasoned professionals
from user research, interaction design, software development and program
management and multimedia. The team’s charter and activities are
broad, ranging from helping to define SAP’s corporate strategy,
to product/market entry strategy, to organizational development. The
team works directly with business heads and line management across different
functional and business areas—interfacing extensively with the
CEO and Executive Board Members—to deliver impact and measurable
value on SAP solutions and products.

You will be expected to:
- Lead cross-functional teams engaged in strategic, organizational,
or operational projects focusing on improving the way SAP designs its
solutions, including the develop architecture, tools and platforms.
- Actively manage projects including all aspects of problem solving
from identifying issues, conducting market/user/competitive research,
synthesizing the results into principles and opportunities, developing alternative
concepts for user validation, and working with internal company stakeholders
to implement solutions/services
- Engage effectively with our clients (Executive Management of SAP),
SAP stakeholders (e.g. internal managers, external consultants) SAP customers,
and of course SAP end-users.
- Develop “throw-away” prototypes to make the corporate
strategy tangible and to use these prototypes to drive by-in from all
parts of the organization.
- Resourcefully navigate in a global corporate environment and drive
results through effective syndication.
Position Responsibilities:
Main Responsibilities Include:
- Apply “design thinking” strategically by assessing
how technology affects the business process and the organization as
well as how it empowers the individual user.
- Evangelize DST efforts across the company; work with executives
to dramatically improved services and solutions.
- Engage collaboratively and flexibly with team members in prototype
scenario development
- Play an active role in all aspects of the design process including
identification of user needs, requirements definition, storyboarding,
prototyping, and iterative end user validation
- Provide hands-on support in developing of prototypes, including
functional prototypes, wire frame layouts, mock-ups and development of
behavior specifications.
- Drive and manage projects to address current SAP customer needs
as well as next generation solutions.
- Drive broad-based adoption of design driven development practices
through internal and external projects as well as training and education.
- Engage both internally with SAP stakeholders and externally with
SAP customers.
- Ensure project is delivered with high-quality, on-time, and according
to pre-defined business and technical specifications
- Engage with project team and end users in all aspects of the design
process including identification of user needs, requirements definition,
storyboarding and prototyping, and iterative end user validation
Ideal Candidate Profile:
- Proficiency with rapid prototyping tools such as Flash/Flex,
PhotoShop, Dreamweaver, Visio, etc.
- Proven track record of out-of-the-box, innovative thinking and design
- Passion for end-user focused software applications design and development
with an appreciation and empathy for the entire software design process
including strategy, engineering development, and production rollout
- Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively engage
and convey ideas to cross-functional technical and non-technical teams
- Experience leading and managing software development or implementation
projects through multiple product lifecycles, ideally from initial
concept to product launch
- Superior communication skills and the ability to effectively engage
and convey ideas to cross-functional technical and business solution
management teams
- Passion for end-user focused software applications design and development
with an appreciation and empathy for the entire software design process
including strategy, engineering development, and production rollout
- Well developed skills and experience using project management tools,
such as Microsoft Project
- Proven track record of out-of-the-box, innovative thinking and design
- Degree in one of the following preferred: Interaction Design,
Communication Design, Computer Science, Business, Economics, Multi-media,
Cognitive Psychology, Industrial Engineering, or Computer Science.
- German language skills a plus, but not required
Basic Qualifications:
- 3 - 5 years professional project management experience
