Individual Pushbuttons | Group of Pushbuttons

German Version

This page provides guidelines for the formulation of pushbuttons texts.

Individual Pushbuttons

Rules

  1. If possible, write the action as an infinitive verb together with the object which the action affects as the text of a pushbutton. Pushbuttons for navigation do not need to follow this rule.
  2. Use uppercase for the first letter on a pushbutton.
  3. Since the texts should accurately describe what the user triggers by pushing the button, formulate the pushbutton texts as precisely as possible. For example, use "Change address" instead of "Process".
  4. Design Display additional information as a hyperlink.

Standard Formulation

<Action> <Object> (rule 1)

Rules

  1. When the user performs different actions for the same object (for example, Change invoice, Display invoice, and Cancel invoice), write the action only as the pushbutton text, if it is clear through the context which object is being used (in this case "invoice").
  2. When the user performs the same action for different objects (for example, Change posting, Change partial cancellation, and Change address), write the object only as the pushbutton text, if it is clear through the context which action is being performed (in this case "change").
  3. If the user has several options, use a two-column table to describe in which circumstances each option can be used.
  4. Position an instruction over the pushbutton it is describing.
