            New Article Added to 10th Anniversary Edition: Design for the Elderly
            - Getting Started
          </title>
          <description>
            <b></b>
            Design for the elderly has become a prominent topic at UI and design
            conferences in recent years. On the SAP Design Guild, it has not
            been covered yet specifically - only in the context of universal
            usability. This is our author's very first article about this topic,
            and therefore he will focus on getting a foothold in the domain.
            He will look for aspects that define and drive design activities
            in support of elderly people. Personal references from conference
            visits and a few personal experiences with old people are included
            to spice this article up a little.

            New Editorial: Final Spurt for 2010 on the SAP Design Guild
          </title>
          <description>
            As 2010 draws to a close, the SAP Design Guild Website publishes
            a small wave of articles for its 10th Anniversary Edition. In this
            editorial, our author would like to touch briefly on the challenges
            we faced with the anniversary edition in the summer, spend a few
            words on the newly published articles, and provide a brief outlook
            on the 10th Anniversary Edition in 2011. Then he will take the opportunity
            to direct your attention to a new section on the SAP Design Guild,
            the UI Design Blinks, which has not been covered in an editorial
            yet. He will close this editorial with a glimpse at the first ideas
            for the SAP Design Guild Website in 2011.

            New Article Added to 10th Anniversary Edition: Design is the Solution
            - From Visual Clarity to Clarity in the Mind
          </title>
          <description>
            In 2009, SAP introduced a marketing campaign that promoted the concepts
            of
&quot;
            clear enterprises
&quot;
            and
&quot;
            clarity.
&quot;
            Interestingly, SAP's marketing campaign did not make any mention
            of one team in its organization whose job it is to strive for clarity,
            albeit at a different level: SAP User Experience (SAP UX). Therefore,
            our author would like to use this article to approach clarity from
            a UI design point of view, as SAP UX does.

            New Article Added to 10th Anniversary Edition: Sustainability, SAP,
            and Design...
          </title>
          <description>
            Sustainability has been a prominent topic in the
&quot;
            real
&quot;
            world for decades, but has also become more visible in the HCI community
            in recent years. For our author, however, sustainability is a fairly
            new topic in the context of UI design: His recent review of Nathan
            Shedroff's book
            <i>
              Design is the Problem
            </i>
            constituted his first encounter with it. With this more personal
            article, he continues his sustainability engagement in the UI design
            field on the SAP Design Guild.

            Book Review: Analyzing Social Media with NodeXL (Derek Hansen, Ben
            Shneiderman, and Marc Smith)
          </title>
          <description>
            When our author attended a Web 2.0 symposium at the University of
            Bonn, Germany, in late 2006, the conference speaker who impressed
            him most was Marc Smith. Smith, who was working at Microsoft Research
            at the time, used beautiful graphs (probably bubble charts) to visualize
            social media networks that were derived from analyses of bulletin
            boards at Microsoft. This summer, some four years later, Ben Shneiderman
            drew our author's attention to a new book that he had co-authored
            with Marc Smith and Derek Hansen:
            <i>
              Analyzing Social Media Networks with NodeXL
            </i>
            . Like Shneiderman, Hansen is a member of the HCIL, the Human-Computer
            Interaction Laboratory at the University of Maryland. Once again,
            social media networks and Marc Smith were brought into our author's
            focus. The title suggests that the book is primarily about
            <i>
              NodeXL
            </i>
            , a tool for analyzing social networks. As we will see in the course
            of the review, this is only partly true. The book could actually
            be regarded as three books in one. But readers get much more than
            just three books inside one cover: They can also obtain the tool
            in question free of charge, because
            <i>
              NodeXL
            </i>
            is available in the Open Source community. What more could you want?
            Our author will come back to this question in his conclusion.

            Book Review: Designing with the Mind in Mind (Jeff Johnson)
          </title>
          <description>
            Our author heard of Jeff Johnson's book
            <i>
              Designing with the Mind in Mind
            </i>
            for the first time shortly after the UPA International Conference
            2010. As the book had just been released, Johnson expected it to
            be available at the book stand - but it was not, as a colleague told
            our author. This news inspired him to include the book in our book
            list and publish a short presentation on the SAP Design Guild. In
            time, however, the book disappeared from his horizon. Recently, however,
            Dan Rosenberg, Senior Vice President, SAP User Experience, asked
            him whether he had read the book - Rosenberg had just finished reading
            it and had also attended a presentation by Jeff Johnson about the
            book's topics. This brought the book back to our author's attention
            - he rushed to buy a copy, read it, and review it. Here is his review!

            Story: DIS 2010 – A UI Design Practitioner's Report
          </title>
          <description>
            DIS (Designing Interactive Systems) is one of the smaller design
            conferences, typically held every other year, and intended to
&quot;
            address design as an integrated activity spanning technical, social,
            cognitive, organizational, and cultural factors.
&quot;
            The conference announcement continues:
&quot;
            It brings together professional designers, ethnographers, systems
            engineers, usability engineers, psychologists, design managers, product
            managers, academics and anyone involved in the design of interactive
            systems.

            As these statements sound quite ambitious, our author has included
            a reality check of them in his very personal DIS 2010 report, which
            was written from a UI design practitioner's perspective.

            New Story: Beyond Clicking: Successful 2010 SAP User Experience Conference
            in Shanghai
          </title>
          <description>
            In July 2010, the SAP user experience (UX) team organized the SAP
            User Experience Conference at Shanghai International Convention Center.
            Over 200 industry practitioners, university professors, and students
            from the UX field joined the one-day event. Drawing on years of experience
            in user interface (UI) design, senior members of the SAP UX team
            shared their insights into current business application design, illustrated
            with examples from SAP's state-of-the-art solutions. Experienced
            designers from peer companies and university researchers shared their
            design thinking and speculated on emerging UI technology trends,
            making the conference a grand gathering for the UX community in China.
            Read a review of the event by Jeff Zhu.

            Book Review: Design is the Problem (Nathan Shedroff)
          </title>
          <description>
            In the blog on the companion Website for his new book
&quot;
            Design is the Problem
&quot;
            , author Nathan Shedroff asks:
&quot;
            Are you as sick of sustainability as I am?
&quot;
            and continues:
&quot;
            It seems that everywhere you turn these days, sustainability is the
            hot topic. While this is a good thing - and a needed one - people
            are already getting 'green fatigue'.
&quot;
            One might be tempted to ask:
&quot;
            So, why another book about sustainability?
&quot;
            Shedroff argues, and would probably counter, that
&quot;
            over the last 40 years, little has changed in spite of all the discussions,
            while the issues have increased dramatically. [...] What needs to
            change is that we all need to decide, now, that sustainability is
            a given.
&quot;
            Shedroff's book intends to push everyone in this direction: While
            it deals with the negative as well as positive impact of his own
            profession, design, on sustainability, it considers the impact from
            a broader perspective - one which might help reach such an agreement.

            Book Review: The Art of Seeing (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
&amp;
            Rick E. Robinson)
          </title>
          <description>
            <i>
              The Art of Seeing
            </i>
            by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Rick E. Robinson is based on a psychological
            study to discover what constitutes an aesthetic experience. This
            work is a result of interpretations from interviews conducted with
            several museum professionals who are primarily 'consumers' of art
            (as opposed to 'creators' of art)
&#8211;
            such as curators, educators, and directors of major art collections.
            This approach to defining an aesthetic experience from the consumer's
            point of view makes the subject particularly interesting to HCI professionals,
            because they can draw parallels with what constitutes an aesthetic
            experience for
&quot;
            consumers
&quot;
            of the software they build. Not surprisingly, many of the criteria
            for an aesthetic experience explained in this book bear a striking
            similarity to the fundamental design principles and methods that
            lead to good user experience.

            New Story: iKitchen
          </title>
          <description>
            In this report, Frank Reichert and Fabian Kraft, together with their
            supervisor Thomas Hirt, present a novel interactive kitchen system
            that they created as part of their studies at the University of Applied
            Sciences in Düsseldorf. The challenge that Frank and Fabian faced
            was another facet of Thomas Hirt's interests: to develop visionary
            concepts and designs for an interactive kitchen interface. The project
            was a collaboration with an industry partner so the project was not
            only about design but also involved the entire product development
            life-cycle, including a market analysis on which the final design
            concepts were based.

            more than 95,000 customers in over 120 countries, it was founded
            in 1972 in Walldorf, Germany, where its headquarters still reside
            – about 300 km (or 200 miles) from Munich. Being so close to the
            conference, SAP User Experience (SAP UX) feels a strong pull to participate
            and will do so in a number of ways. In the editorial, our authors
            will take a brief look at SAP UX's upcoming activities at the conference.

            New Story: The Promise of Using UI Patterns for Large Software Packages
            Revisited
          </title>
          <description>
            In this case, study Annette Stotz and Udo Arend reflect on how a
            UI pattern-based design for building standard business software affects
            the user experience and the user-centered design process. Pattern-based
            design does not optimize the user experience per se. Additional factors,
            such as user-centered design, prototyping tools, and management support
            determine the success or failure of the pattern-based approach. Interweaving
            the factors in the right way is a prerequisite for success.

          <description>
            Biomimicry is a revolutionary new science that analyzes nature's
            best ideas and adapts them for human use. Janine Benyus is a natural
            sciences writer, innovation consultant, and author of several books.
            In
&quot;
            Biomimicry,

          <description>
            Ten years ago, on April 1, 2000 the SAP Design Guild Website was
            opened to the public. In this editorial, long-time team members Christine
            Ronnewinkel and Gerd Waloszek would like to provide a quick summary
            of the history of the site as well as a brief outlook with regard
            to its future and thank all their visitors for their long-standing

          <description>
            In less than a month's time, the SAP Design Guild Website will celebrate
            its 10th anniversary. The SAP Design Guild team decided to celebrate
            this anniversary in a special way, namely by cumulatively collecting
            articles in an
&quot;
            anniversary edition
&quot;
            throughout the anniversary year. In this editorial, the team announces

            New Edition: Start of the 10th Anniversary Edition
          </title>
          <description>
            The eleventh edition of the SAP Design Guild Website is a very special
            one. It commemorates the upcoming 10th anniversary of the Website
            in April 2010 and will be our special way of celebrating this event.
&quot;
            Special way
&quot;
            means that, unlike previous editions, this one will not be published
&quot;
            all in one go.
&quot;
            Instead, it will be a
&quot;
            growing
&quot;
            or
&quot;
            cumulative
&quot;
            edition, with articles being added in the course of the anniversary
            year. This publication style will keep the anniversary fresh in the
            minds of both visitors and the SAP Design Guild team and will thus
            provide a neat way of celebrating and commemorating it.

            Book Review: Presentation Zen (Garr Reynolds)
          </title>
          <description>
            Have you ever sat through a presentation that was much too full of
            information and much too long? You could hardly look at the slides,
            and there was clipart that was out of context? Looking back, you
            can hardly remember what the presentation was about, but you know
            that you had the feeling someone was stealing your time. Now, imagine
            having a completely different experience – or even being the one
            to offer people that different experience! Our author came across
            Garr Reynolds’ book, Presentation Zen, when when she had the pleasure
            of listening to a couple of presentations given by a colleague that
            were utterly and truly different from anything she had ever seen
            before. Read why she likes this book.

            Brenda Laurel's book Design Research, Methods and Perspectives is
            on the market since 2003 and still finds new readers. Our review
            author read the book just recently and was impressed by it. She felt
            like providing a detailed review of the book, because she found it
            extremely important for anyone in the user experience field to read.
